A jailbreaker known as "Pliny the Liberator" claimed to have bypassed Fable 5's safety layer. The government's intervention is understood to stem from concern over a method of jailbreaking the model.

WHAT HAPPENED
- Anthropic releases Claude Fable 5 - the first public model in its Mythos-class family. Mythos 5 itself stays restricted to vetted partners.
- A jailbreaker, "Pliny the Liberator", claims to have liberated Fable 5 and posts what they describe as its leaked system prompt. Anthropic disputes that this is a real jailbreak.
- Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick sends Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei an export-control directive, barring access to Fable 5 and Mythos 5 by any foreign national - inside or outside the US, including Anthropic's own staff.
- Unable to separate foreign nationals from its user base in real time, Anthropic disables both models for everyone worldwide and asks AWS to revoke Bedrock access for all users.
- Anthropic's status page reads: "We've suspended access to Claude Mythos 5 and Claude Fable 5." It calls the order a misunderstanding, says it is working to restore access, and gives no ETA.
WHY - THE JAILBREAK CLAIM
Anthropic disputes there is a universal jailbreak. It says the government gave only verbal evidence of one narrow, non-universal method, that no tester has defeated all of Fable 5's safeguards, and that the same capability is already available in other public models (it named OpenAI's GPT-5.5).
CORRECTION Amazon did not jailbreak Fable. Mainstream reporting does not name the company that flagged a jailbreak to officials; the "it was Amazon" claim is uncorroborated. AWS Bedrock customers were cut off as users, not as the cause.
WHAT YOU CAN RUN RIGHT NOW
Only Fable 5 and Mythos 5 were pulled. Anthropic's other models stay available worldwide - and the rest of the frontier is untouched. You are not locked out of capable AI. Here is the working set:
* Bedrock availability of Anthropic models excludes the suspended Fable 5 / Mythos 5. Verify current model lists with each provider - this table is updated as the situation moves.
